Python is a very popular programming language for scientific computing, but since Python programs are interpreted, they are inherently slower than equivalent code written in compiled languages. This 30-minute webinar followed by Q & A will provide an overview of strategies, packages, and tools that have been developed to overcome this limitation and to enable the expressiveness of Python to be combined with compiled code for improved performance. The webinar is intended as an introduction and complement to online training materials in the Cornell Virtual Workshop (cvw.cac.cornell.edu) that address these issues in greater detail. It will be given as a live demo in order to illustrate some of the available tools for performance assessment and interactive computing.
