Using the Jetstream cloud system and applying for an allocation of compute and storage resources

Audience: People who have never applied for a research allocation through XSEDE

The Jetstream cloud system is the first production cloud system funded to support research in all disciplines of science and engineering by the National Science Foundation. Its name is based on the Jetstream in the upper atmosphere – which stands at the boundary of two very large masses of air. Jetstream is intended to stand at the boundary between existing NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure (CI) and CI users, and new users of NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure. Jetstream is also a very different system than the types of system for which the XSEDE resource request application was written. What this means is that the process for requesting allocations on Jetstream for research purposes can be very confusing for the researchers, students, and educators we most want to attract to use of Jetstream.

This webinar is designed to inform people about the Jetstream cloud system, and how it can help you – a person who has never before used something like an XSEDE-supported system, part of the NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure. We will in particular walk through the allocation process including the process of requesting a large research allocation without necessarily going through a long process of using what is called a startup allocation over the course of many months.
